As we approach the first Online Responsibility Day, we’re excited to share a glimpse behind the scenes of our school assembly video. This forms part of our schools pack and features Daft Dog, brought to life with Phil Fletcher, the puppeteer and puppet builder behind characters seen on CBeebies and Blue Peter.
Reaching young minds and establishing positive online culture from an early age is critical to building online spaces that are both respectful and responsible - and that's exactly what this year's assembly video sets out to do.
About Online Responsibility Day
Online Responsibility Day falls on 24th September 2026 - -t's a global campaign day encouraging schools, families, organisations and online platforms think about the role we play in creating more respectful online spaces. On the day, we're asking one simple question...
"What kind of online citizens do we choose to be, and how do our actions affect others?"
Who is Daft Dog?
Daft Dog is the face of our school outreach - a warm, funny character designed to get children talking about how they treat each other online. Phil Fletcher's puppet-building pedigree (pun intended) speaks for itself - his characters have entertained children on some of the UK's best-loved shows. Daft Dog has real personality, and that's what makes him such an effective messenger for a topic as important as online responsibility.
Daft Dog is only one part of our campaign – as well as getting schools involved, we’re delighted to have several organisations and councils getting involved on the day, including some iconic landmarks lighting up purple. We’ve also recently hosted a round table with founding members of Online Responsibility Network, and are looking forward to another on the day.
Resources for schools
The video is now part of the free school resources we've been distributing ready to be shown in classrooms and assemblies around the world as part of Online Responsibility Day. We’ve also offered online safety posters that can be used year round, an activity workbook, pledge cards and our parent’s newsletter.
